ERAU Aeronautical Science

Our world-famous flight education is the most comprehensive four-year academic program in the country and is the core of the Aeronautical Science program. The Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Science combines flight training with academic preparation in the technical and managerial aspects of aviation – the skills and knowledge demanded by today’s aviation industry. The program also offers you the option to enhance specific skills and customize your program through advanced flight training, including upset recovery, flight instructor and instrument flight instructor certificates, and familiarization training as a flight crew member in a jet transport aircraft.

Embry-Riddle’s pilot training program is supported by aircraft suitable for all instructional purposes, from basic flight training through advanced multi-engine.
The fleet consists of a balanced mix of flight training aircraft including new-generation Cessna 172’s and Piper Seminole twin-engine aircraft – the safest training aircraft in the sky, supported by the best maintenance program in pilot training. Our flight training center houses the most advanced selection of simulation devices of any university program in the US, featuring 220-degree wraparound screens that project high-resolution satellite imagery.

Students who successfully complete this major earn an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings. In addition, students can choose to specialize in one of three areas:

Airline Pilot: Designed for those who want to fly for a scheduled air carrier. Highly technical, upper-level courses provide the foundation for capstone flight courses consistent with current airline transport pilot (ATP) requirements.

Commercial Pilot: Tailored to meet the needs of future pilots whose career interests demand a flexible degree program. It offers expanded opportunities to select courses that meet the varied needs of corporate flight operations and other segments of the airline industry. (This specialty requires a minor.)

Military Pilot: Designed for those who want to fly for a branch of the US military. The Military Pilot Specialty is not part of any ROTC program, but permits the optimum utilization of credits that students earn though ROTC involvement.

This flexible major will prepare graduates for a variety of careers. They can train for a career as an airline, corporate, commercial, or military pilot. New-Hire Bridge Programs provide special opportunities for students to become new-hire pilots with an airline upon graduation. Current bridge programs include Atlantic Coast Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Phillip Morris Aviation, and Airnet Express.

Flight and other technical aviation courses required in the Aeronautical Science degree program total 84 semester hours, far in excess of the technical requirements of other four-year programs, which helps ensure that graduates have a strong competitive edge. In addition, the major provides a foundation for further development in such aviation-related disciplines as aviation safety, flight operations management, airway regulations and aircraft technologies.
